Junior Match, Broadwater
2nd June 2018

With plenty of space for the seven competitors, it would not be down to that which would spoil their day. It would be more like the hot weather which saw fish cruising just under the surface, a sure sign that feeding was not on their minds, despite previous reports of good fishing. Even so, it would be down to the area they did fancy the odd nimble!

Draw is always important on any match and last years top junior Ben Gregoriades showed his skill once more at pulling the ‘rabbit out of the hat’ with an end peg at the top of the swimming pool bank (peg 4). But it was Dan Norris on peg 12 who had the first fish, a decent size common of 11lb 1oz. Not to be denied, Ben then proceeded to take a further 5 fish for a total of 51lb 10oz, topped by an even bigger common of 11lb 14oz and an easy win. Dan did add to that first fish with another two, to register a 29lb 8oz for second place. Our young female star, Jessica Carter, usually goes for the masses of silvers present in the lake and had a stellar day weighing in a superb net of roach, rudd and perch for 15lb 10ozs for third place.

1st Ben Gregoriades 51-10-0, peg 4
2nd Dan Norris 29-8-0, peg 12
3rd Jessica Carter 15-10-0, peg 14
4th Tom Stratford-Tuke 9-13-0, peg 10
5th Ellis Newnham, 9-11-0, peg 19

Junior Match, Dads & Lads
May 12th 2018

With rain forecast for later in the day, the 7 pairs kicked off in reasonable weather, but as usual the weatherman got it wrong again and rain started to fall halfway into the match. We saw two new additions to the usual lads & dads teams with Dan Winfield and Adrian Trent bringing their off-springs to sample the delights of GAS team fishing, which they thoroughly enjoyed!

With a disappointing draw, Team Etherington started well, much to their surprise and kept going to remain ahead of the field until the final whistle. Paul showed that he’s kept the good form from his recent Wednesday open successes with a super catch of tench to the bomb and maggot for 31lb 8ozs with son Ethan adding the best junior weight of 18lb 5ozs of bream and tench for a joint 49lb 13oz win.

Nearest rivals were the consistent team of Dave & Michael Ewing. Dave weighed in 27lb 8ozs which included a carp of around 8lb while Michael managed 9lb 8ozs of bream and tench for a respectable second place with 37lb.

Third place went to one of the new additions, Dan and Harrison Winfield. But it was Harrison who showed his dad how to catch with a commendable 15lb 15oz of tench and bream to his dads 9lb 2oz.

Coming in fourth was the second new pairing of Adrian and Wilbur Trent who managed a joint weight of 22lb 1oz.

Well done to all the teams, no matter where you finished.

1st Paul & Ethan Etherington 49-13-0
2nd Dave & Michael Ewing 37-0-0
3rd Dan & Harrison Winfield 25-1-0
4th Adrian & Wilbur Trent 22-1-0
5th Graham & Harry Franklin 14-6-0
6th Marcus & Ben Gregoriades 11-0-0
7th Dave & Jessica Carter 5-14-0

The lake looked perfect at the start, but quickly changed as the breeze began to push surface scum across the junior pegs. With no bonus fish putting in an appearance, it was those who opted for the smaller species that triumphed.

From the off, it was Freddie Bacon who set the lead, but as he slowed up later, Jessica Carter started to catch up and it proved a close thing at the end. Freddie concentrated on the pole and maggot and took a steady stream of silver bream and roach for 6lb 10ozs for a narrow win. Jessica tried for a bonus fish but when they where not forthcoming she went onto the pole with maggot or worm and started to peg back Freddie to finish just behind with 6lb 6ozs.

We had a new addition to the junior ranks with Freddie’s sister Sky joining us and nearly upstaging the more experienced juniors. Sky just concentrated on the pole and maggot and caught a lovely net of silvers and roach for 5lb 4ozs.

There were only 5 who turned out so there were no age groups, but everyone earned points in the Sensas league.

1st Freddie Bacon 6-10-0, peg 11
2nd Jessica Carter 6-6-0, peg 8
3rd Sky Bacon 5-4-0, peg 7
4th Ben Gregoriades, 1-15-0, peg 6
5th Dan Norris 1-9-0, peg 9

Sensas Junior Points League (SJPL) after 2 rounds:
Ben Gregoriades 7pts
Jessica Carter 7pts
Freddie Bacon 5pts
Ben Barnett 4pts
Sky Bacon 3pts
Tom Stratford-Tuke 2pts
Dan Norris 1pt
